The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of silencing instances with more than 10k followers just as a general rule.

@Are0h It does seem like having 300,000+ users is the opposite of the point of federated media (though I suppose there's an argument to be made for stress testing on mastodon.social)

@Are0h for a while on tumblr I just didn't reblog anything with more than a few thousand notes. It was nice.

@Are0h On one hand, I see the intent of encouraging people to join smaller instances, but there runs the equal risk that people will simply join the big instances because there are more people there and they want to reach some of the content contained there, thus simply causing smaller instances to shrivel up more.

@TheHottestPotato As making multiple accounts depending on interest is standard fare in the fedi, this specific risk is mitigated.

As people have shown, they do both.
