Yeah, can hem and haw about whatever, but it is very easy to directly trace most issues in America to the policy authored by the officials white people consistency support.

I don't want to hear we need to work together, or it's all our responsibility. Because it isn't.

This keeps happening because of white people.

I asked him for the statistics he was refering to. He told me to go find them myself.

There are no such statistics and he’s just using the language of science to support his opinion. (An opinion I agree with for the most part btw). The word for this is pseudoscience.

It won't. Seeing non-white people suffer does not move white people to change anything. Sure, they cry at brunch and tell their friends IT'S SO BAD, but the result? Nothing. Most white people just don't give a shit. And the ones that act are usually racist.

It doesn't take rocket science to figure out why the US is in the state it is.

@Are0h About the only thing that would move most to action would be to put their own kids in concentration camps, and make humane treatment of the children that ICE is holding, including reuniting them with their families, a condition of their release.

And that's beyond the pale - this isn't a suggestion, it's commentary on what it'd take to get the American majority to support humane treatment.

I say that after watching mass shooting after mass shooting take place and the very tepid response from white America to protect their children from weapons.

I'm just not convinced that even that would move white people to action. I have no idea what it would take because we see so much violence and marginalization every day... and the 45 got elected.

Yep. The one thing that gives me hope is that he was the first and there was no way that wasn't going to happen. I heard Colin Powell considered a run but his wife nixed it because she was sure the first Black President would get assassinated. That, at least, didn't happen. There is still a long way to go obviously and there is no excuse for needing a bunch of "scary" Presidents before we're willing to accept it.

This history of America is replete with examples of white Americans setting progress with their vote because they are unwilling to allow anyone else to enjoy the same rights and benefits as them.

@Are0h The opposite. Things have become much less oppressive since universal suffrage.

@OutOnTheMoors There are a lot of similarities between the US and South Africa when you look at the amount of resistance white people put forth to resist making any concessions that would make them even remotely accountable for the harm they've caused and are causing.

@Are0h Probably one of the biggest things to overcome is the recognition of white privilege. I benefited in many ways - education, medical care, freedom of association, legal standing, even diet - growing up under apartheid. This can't be obliterated, but it can be acknowledged and used to to address the inequalities that exist.

I agree it's not permanent. I was merely acknowledging it.
It's a strange beast as the benefits are mostly material, while the costs are internal - emotional and psychological. White people cling to that privilege because they're selfish and scared, and the fear stems not from any outside threat but of finding they can't compete on a level playing field.
The irony is they could - we're all people.

The stopping point for me is the violence. White folks get so hostile when even talking about that privilege. The defense of it is so consistently violent.

If it wasn't for that, I'd have a lot more sympathy for it. But I can't because so many lives are being ruined in defense of an ideology that doesn't even benefit it's practitioners.

The only reason for the claims of "white genocide" in South Africa these days are that murders of white people no longer take precedence (news coverage, police resources, etc) over any other group. The murder rate - as well as the overall crime rate - has consistently declined since 1994.

@Are0h talking about this stuff is important because it forces us to acknowledge the power structures that are enabling these atrocities and if you're white, it's deeply uncomfortable but that's exactly why it's especially important on us to step up and consciously prioritize justice over the status quo
