I think it's good people are talking about the differences in platforms and all that, but the blind side I see over and over again from white people no matter how they align politically is that they assume their experience is the baseline. And it isn't.
If you are white, you simply do not have the same experiences as non-white people online. If you're a dude, you are not a target like women are.
A common failing is that white people tend to assume interactions are uniform.
This is false.
With that said, I do like that people are talking.
I'm concerned that's all it will be, which is kind of shaping the long term prospects of using Masto for me personally, but we'll see.
I like the direction the conversation is going, but I'm also seeing the common pitfalls that come along with taking about culture and more importantly, those who do not prioritize those implications because it has not been their experience.
But I'm gonna stick around to see where it goes.

@Are0h
I know nothing about coding, but building a platform round the concerns of marginalised and opressed voices is good for everyone in my opinion, even cis white het men like me. If I miss out on a few bells & whistles features because of it I'll survive.
PS Finding your posts very informative and they are appreciated
@Level14Boss Yeah, that's a big point. White men who whine about features and not having this and that for the sake of considering marginalized communities always strikes me as such juvenile entitlement because they are losing _nothing_.
They are just not getting their way in that moment, and that is usually enough to send them into a tizzy.
It would be funny if the consequences didn't result in responses like electing a racist sexual predator for POTUS.
@Are0h
Agree with all of this, and thanks for the reply
@Are0h fair point.
This kind of goes back to the point I was talking about code vs culture.
I wish I could just make technical considerations the primary point when deciding what social media I use when I'm online.
But as my words and profile upset people who refuse to view the world outside of their own myopia, I have to consider dealing with waves of harassment as well.
It's a privilege to not have to worry about sustained harassment.
I find this experience is often lacking when people talk software.
