My views are only 'controversial' if you are ignorant of this history that continues to this day, the most visible example being the latest US POTUS election.

I'm not saying white people love racism because I think every white person is racist. I say white people are racist because that is what they are _showing_ us.

It's not me that is piercing the bubble of white delusion. It is history itself. There is a reason why education is not valued in the US.

I understand talking plainly about the affects of white American culture is shocking for a lot of people that can relate and identify with that culture.

If this is you, you need to examine _why_ this is so shocking to you and why the first reaction you reach for is hostility. You need to investigate why your first thought is to harm a person you don't know.

You need to reflect on why speaking on reality is so offensive to you.

In light of history and current events, I don't believe I need to bend over backwards to convince or change the minds of white people concerning the sincerity of my desire make real connections and have honest conversations.

I believe it's the other way. White people need to put more effort into convincing me they aren't bigots. Why? Because in white communities, those are the people that have the loudest voices.

That's called reality.

@Are0h An interesting view I have as a "white hispanic" is how tightly groups that were marginalized as 'ethnic' not even a century ago cling to their white identity. Like they know the price of integration into "whiteness" was putting a boot on the neck of their cousin.

I don't agree with it because it just perpetuates the problem, but I can understand why someone would make that choice to escape racism... or more accurately at least try.

@Are0h it's so arbitrary and cruel who does or does not get that out. I remember an african-american relating an anecdote on birbsite about a college professor describing the process of immigrant communities integrating into 'whiteness'. The student then asking, "When do I get to become white".

I remember, similarly, a family wedding I attended as a kid where the reception hall was pretty evenly divided between Spanish and English speaking relations, and the differences were so stark it shocked me. I had cousins sitting across a table, who lived across town, but whose lived experience was a foreign country.

@paragate Arbitrary and cruel is a great way to describe whiteness. In reality it's not even based on the color of one's skin, because ethnicity is not bound to melanin content, but rather the _perception_ of what someone is based upon the completely subjective aspect of race. It's complete non-sense.

But that's why it does. It divides us up based on a constantly set of shifting principles that are non-sensical.

Here in South Africa, a country infamous for its racial inequality, there is an extremely aggressive reaction from the white population when accused of perpetuating racial injustices.

Most of them shift the blame in a sense. "I'm not mad because I'm racist, I'm mad because the government is corrupt," someone says, and because the government has been corrupt it's hard to prove otherwise. For the most part...

@1stPersonTooter Based on the fool that is POTUS and the uptick in hate crimes in the US, it's pretty similar here as well.

It's considered taboo to talk about the obviousness of racism because so many white people are invested in perpetuating the delusion it doesn't matter.

And just like in SA, white folks here get violent when anything disturbs that bubble.

Don't know if Americans are similarly self-deluded, but I get the feeling that telling white people to examine their aggressive reactions isn't enough to convince them that they might be supporting shitty ideologies.

@1stPersonTooter I can't speak to the actual experience in SA, but it seems to be very similar to what happens in the States.

I would say white Americans are deluded as well. The racist backlash against Obama's administration is still not enough to convince white people of how prevalent racism is in their cultures. They just refuse to see reality while simultaneously complaining about a crumbling country.

@Are0h I want in this discussion. I am a white American , served in the Marine Corps. Anyone who has done research and read more than school history books knows how the world is governed. Yes the “white European” abused so much power. We need to actually start educating better and telling the real truth of what happened in history especially the ugly and horrible things. That is the only way we can prevent from happening again.

@amsomniac It's always been funny to me how white people get so angry when they are reminded that they identify with a particular culture. White America takes great pains to remind us everyday we are not like them, but when that frame is reversed, it is a DAMNING OFFENSE.

This kind of highlights that white people know what their culture is doing, but would rather ignore it that actually do something. Or, they just like being hateful pricks.
